XML and SMIL

In the 3rd edition of Digital Multimedia, we reduced the description of XML and omitted SMIL entirely. We felt this was justified because XML-based languages have failed to achieve the broad acceptance that we expected when the 2nd edition was written. SMIL, in particular, has seen little use. However, for those instructors who feel that XML has an important place in multimedia, we are providing PDF versions of some of the sections of the 2nd edition which do not appear in the 3rd.

This material has been taken from the 2nd edition of Digital Multimedia without any editing or revision. It is likely to be out of date in some respects.
